Sienna Miller bundled up for the Season

Sienna Miller bundled up for the Season

It’s that time of year again… winter is sneaking up on us quickly and before we know it, it will be on our doorsteps.

Now is the time to start thinking about how you will be “cold weather ready“.  Here are are a few tips to help you get through the season while still looking chic and stylish.

Underlayers are key in the Northeast.  You should never under estimate the extra layer of simple long sleeve tees and turtlenecks.  Splendid is a shop favorite which is why we keep stocked up starting in September and don’t stop until March. An easy cotton/modal blend underlayer can also add a pop of color under a loose woven knit or under the new selection of cropped sweaters.

Sweaters. The obvious cashmere, wool, angora and mohair sweaters, vests and wraps.  Autumn Cashmere, Edun, Joie, Oonagh and more. And let’s not forget cotton fleece and sweatshirts from our other favorites- Kain Label, Monrow and LNA

Tights and Leggings. We can’t live without the Fleece Lined Tights from Plush. Each year they come up with another great color or style and they are true must-haves.  This year we are loving the addition of the leg warmers from them – Simple, easy ways to layer your legs for those cold walks to the coffee shop. We also love Commando’s opaque tights for layering too.

Warm Accessories. Scarves from Me & Kashmiere are a done deal – all year long.  We love the all wrapped up under our coat collars for a gorgeous pop of color.  Carolina Amato and Autumn Cashmere have upped the gloves this year with the classic pop-top and fingerless options. They also both did scarves with Autumn Cashmere stealing our hearts with the new neck warmers and tube scarves - Genius!  And don’t forget your skull cap or snood. A hat is a must. I wear one everyday – even indoors sometimes and always will. The snoods are my fav- slouchy and cute with my long hair.

Wear the Season’s Hottest Hues & Prints with Me & Kashmiere Scarves

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Leaf Stitch

Leaf Stitch

It’s true, scarves are a must have no matter where you live.  We especially appreciate them as the evenings get cooler here in the NorthEast.

One designer we love to praise for their ingenuity of a “must-have” scarf is Me & Kashmiere.  This is our fifth season with the brand and each season it only gets better and better. This season, with the trends being so dominate, Me & Kashmiere is right there at the fore front. Here are a few highlights to share how you can wear these beauties in the hottest hues and prints.

Military

I love the subtly these prints and colors allow. Get a touch of the military trend with the use of Olive, but still have a very wearable print with the additional shades of feminine pinks and reds mixed in. Paired with a blazer and white button up, this scarf is going to be the perfect addition to your accessories closet. Want a more “traditional” military camo print? Check out these versions.

Minimalist

Skull

Skull

This is a great scarf for those of us still clinging to the motorcycle trend, yet want to show it in a more soft manner this fall.   A soft, muted tone-on-tone palette is a great way to wear the minimalist trend. Minimalist is the perfect way to describe this Skull Print Scarf.  Of course, pair it with a clean, sleek tee and dark skinny jeans and boots to carry the full look.  I myself can’t let go and will be wearing the Blush/Black version of this scarf.

Chic Chevron

Ladylike

Nothing says “Ladylike” more  than this Chic Chevron Print. With a beautiful color mix of browns and purple tones, the graphic print is undeniable.  Perfectly paired with a form fitting Shoshanna Peplum dress and pointed toe sling backs, this is a look for the ages. We love the version in blacks and greys  just as much.

Reptile Print

Animal Print

A trend that never seems to get old, it just keeps getting better.  One way to wear this continuing trend is with a scarf.  And not just any scarf, a beautiful, cashmere scarf.  Whether you prefer a Snake print, a Reptile print or maybe you prefer the Cats, the animal prints are sure to win your heart much faster than the real thing.

The Hottest Hue’s for Fall

Friday, October 8th, 2010

It’s long been thought that Summer is the time to have fun with color, but now Fall is following suite. This season designers have embraced the color wheel and the combinations are so complementary.

We love the mix of military green with the softness of lilac as with this Rebecca Taylor Ostrich Cami and Elizabeth and James Band Jacket. The raw edges of this jacket are a pefect juxtaposition to the soft, fly aways of the cami- don’t you think!

And you must admit, the use of purples and greens and greys doesn’t sound very pretty, but EDUN proves you wrong with this gorgeous silk, asymmetrical hem dress in those exact colors. We love it paired back to the Joie Coachella “must have” boot of the season (Yes, the color is called “mud”).

For a softer version, check out Shoshanna’s Snow Leopard Dress. Animal prints are taking on the new hues as well and this one is stunning – edgy, fun and really wearable. The charcoal and blush tones are perfect for next spring too!

Rebecca Taylor Shirt Dress

Rebecca Taylor Shirt Dress

We also are loving a softer palettes of beige and taupe like this Rebecca Taylor Shirt dress topped off with an bold accessory or top in a punch of red or mixed with an eggplant purple.  Very chic.

We know that the collections are showing lots of greys in both heathers and charcoals, but don’t look at these colors as drab – look at them as a way to add a bit of your own favorite tones to your outfit.  I, for one, love the mix of light grey and yellow like this Elizabeth and James Tokyo top or this Sequined military green Nanette Lepore top with a casual beige sweater.

And don’t forget, a cashmere scarf from Me & Kashmiere in a seasonal color and print goes a long way to show your style.

chantal. has moved! Join us at 229 Commercial Street in Portland Maine

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

It’s been some time since I’ve been able to get to updating the blog. My apologies to all.  The reason is that we’ve been working tirelessing for weeks on our new location at 229 Commercial Street in Portland Maine.

Our new space has wood floors, exposed brick walls and huge ceiling beams and has a bit more of a warehouse feel than our past location.  We are now completely open on Commercial Street (less a few unpacked boxes) and our selection of designers is as amazing as ever.

We’ve added some great new designers to the new space including Treesje and Botkier handbags, now featured on our handbag wall. More styles are arriving daily and the wall should be filled with Fall 2010 bags in no time.

A try-on seating section is close by to our new shoe displays with shoe cabinets close at hand so we can check styles and sizes quickly and easily from Joie, Pour La Victoire and  Cynthia Vincent.

Next to the handbag wall is our set of jewely cases complete with a mirror and shelving making it super easy to try on necklaces, earrings and bracelets from Streets Ahead, Gorjana, GemmaRedux, Alex and Ani and our newest ring designer, Tre.

Floating shelving makes viewing our Splendid tees and Me & Kashmiere scarves a pleasure.  For Fall and Winter, you will find these shelves stocked with gorgeous Autumn Cashmere and sweater pieces from Joie, Edun and Rebecca Taylor.

Our new cable hanging rod system makes our collection of contemporary designers like Shoshanna, Elizabeth & James, Nanette Lepore, Son of John, Monrow and so many more really easy to see and pair up with our amazing pieces of denim.

Just beyond the beautiful hanging collections is our glass cube wall filled with your favorite denim designers including Genetic, [Blank], DL1961, Current/Elliott, Rock & Republic, PRVCY premium and more to come soon.

We hope you will come visit our new space and see what’s new for collections including our expanded shoe and handbag designers.

229 Commecial Street (former Decorum space) is next door to Barbour and McKenzieTribe and across the street from Sushi Sapporo.  207.347.4427 www.shopchantal.com

Trend Alert: Street-Worthy, Safari-Inspired Styles

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

The beauty of this trend is not in dressing to the nines like Nicole Kidman in Australia (although her style was impeccable throughout), or but to take bits of pieces of the safari trend and incorporate it into your daily wardrobe. It is a very wearable and very chic trend.

Think of pieces such as a sheer t-shirt with a touch of khaki or a military green romper paired with studded, neutral sandals and even a simple canvas belt over a beautiful orange chiffon dress.

All, in some way or another, these pieces inspired by the season’s hottest trend: Urban Safari.  A blend of city, street- worthy pieces with colors, textures and/or a style reminiscent of  a Safari exploration.

Here are a few ways to have some fun and look in style.

Add a short, light suede, Spring Bootie from Joie with a silky, sexy, black romper from BCBGMAXAZRIA for the perfect date night outfit.

Pair a loose fitting Cargo-esque style pant with a floral top for a playful afternoon outfit that will be a big hit at the park or out for a casual lunch. We love the Pencey florals for the season.

Or for the most simplest way: throw a Me & Kashmiere Safari Scarf over just about anything in your closet. We love it over an easy, Kain silk blend tee with some Work Custom denim shorts and Joie Cut Out Booties.

So, take a chance, add a bit of this trend to your Spring/Summer wardrobe.  We think you are going to go banana’s over it.

Stylish Coats: This Season’s Styles have more than just warmth

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

It’s no surprise that outwear is an important topic for us at shopchantal.com & chantal.  Since we are based in Portland, ME we have no other choice than to bundle up during the winter months, and style is a priority when choosing that essential coat for the season.  Since we are in a season where almost anything goes (high drama, girly details, and timeless sophistication), the hunt to find a jacket that meets your “keep warm” needs but portrays your individual style is super easy!

Rebecca Taylor’s Ruffle Me Up Coat is the go-to jacket for all the girly-girls at heart!  The tiered ruffle front detail and ruffled collar are super feminine, and the belted waist gives you shape even with all the layers you may be wearing under it.  The slight balloon sleeve adds that extra special detail without being over powering that all of us crave when looking for that special, unique piece that you will have forever!

More edgy, than girly, Shoshanna’s Zipper Front Coat is military-inspired and touches upon that boy meets girl edge that is so of the moment!  We love the off-center exposed zipper and banded detail at the waist.  The color combo of grey & black make this a super versatile coat that can easily be worn dressed up or down.  We love pairing it back to tough pieces to make the military-inspiration pop even more!  Or pair it back to a beautiful pink cashmere scarf and a chef’s beret for a fun, flirty look to an edgy style coat.  Add a touch of fringe with a bag from Twelfth Street or some boots from Joie.

Craving color when the weather can be somewhat dark & dreary?  Nanette Lepore’s D’Orsay Hoodie in Iris is a rich shade of purple in a slightly cropped style that allows you to show off the layers you wear underneath it.  The jacket features so many great details that makes the D’Orsay Hoodie super fun to wear–the exposed zippers at the wrist, polished slit int he back, worn bronze buttons, and the best part of this piece–the detachable hood.

Don’t wait until it’s too late.  The best styles and choices of sizes are here now – waiting for you to add a Carolina Amato snood and some driving gloves or a Me & Kashmiere animal print scarf and some cashmere mittens.  Whichever your style, we can help you complete the look.

Back to Basics: Jeans & Tees…OH MY!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009
Jean & Tee Girl: Drew Barrymore

Jean & Tee Girl: Drew Barrymore

Every year, there are a handful of customers who await for the arrival of certain designers, specific items, and share in our excitement to wear it all NOW.  These same customers also come to us every year looking for similar or the same items that are such staples to their wardrobes that they must “refresh” them every year or simply want more of what they already have.  These women are women after my own heart as I rely on the same basics every year, as well, but I also understand the importance of (this is one of my favorite quotes from one of my dearest friends) “freshin’ it up” – Chantal Young.  Simply put, that favorite t-shirt, pair of jeans, comfy sweater, or warm pair of tights may be a bit worn after living in it all winter long & pieces, such as these, can use a little replacement every now and again.  More importantly, we have picked up some great new designers since last fall (don’t worry we kept all the “old faithfuls,” as well) whose collections include some of the best every-day pieces (especially for the jean & tee girl) we have seen in the 4 years we have been open.

Sharon Segal has perfected the burn out tee in a silhouette that screams, “I am the perfect long sleeve basic!”  For all our customers who have loved Splendid’s Very Light Jersey Collection for tee’s, we are positive that you will fall in love with Sharon Segal’s Cloud Burnout Long Sleeve U Neck, offered in both charcoal and white–my opinion, you’ll need them both.

Long Sleeve t-shirts are always sought after by our customers every year around this time, but it’s also the season for denim!  Basically, it’s a no brainer–what two pieces work more organically together than a tee and jeans?  As most of you know, we are always picking up new denim lines to keep things interesting, and our newest line, [BLANK], has everyone talking.  Not only do their skinny jeans fit perfectly & flatter endlessly, but the price point is very appropriate considering the economy, at the moment.  [BLANK] has offered up two basic washes along with some fun, trend-worthy washes and fabrics, as well.  We are loving their Denim Skinnie Classique in Creamy Asian.  Yes, a basic blue jean in a basic style, but also with just a hint of trends we are loving at the moment (Distressing & Studs–featured, just slightly, on the back pocket).

Important to note, these basics are extremely appropriate for every day and do not have a shelf-life, but they also look best when accessorized just a bit to create a “look” or “style” that is still comfortable, but not boring.  Simply throw on a Me & Kashmiere Scarf, tuck those skinny jeans into a great pair of boots, and find a lush jacket that can be worn with so many different things…and don’t forget the bag!

ToughGirl, Feminine Chic: Modern, Fun, & Edgy

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Mixing masculine and feminine pieces creates an unexpected, cool girl vibe that exudes through the confidence of the one sporting the look.  It’s a little bit world-traveler, definitely edgy, and incredibly appropriate for the type of girl who wants to look sexy, yet be comfortable.  Fall’s offerings are making it easy to create this coveted look with the  heavy presence of motorcross styles, girly silks, and a selection of boots that has my head spinning–WHICH TO CHOOSE!

shopchantal.com & chantal. has everything you need, even the advice on how to get the look all the way down to the small details–studded belts & printed cashmere scarves!

Store favorite, Pencey, has built an entire line around the notion of tough, girl chic and the Wool/Cashmere Peacoat is a great example of the talent, beauty, and toughness incorporated within the line!  The buckles, the belt, the collar–what’s not to love!!!  Shown here with Pencey’s Hobo Pant & Twelfth Street’s Reva Boot, one can see that pulling off this look is as easy as “1, 2, 3″–minimalism is the best approach!

Craving more options?  Here is a look at my top 5 picks for pulling off the “it” girl style of the moment:

1.  A great pair of Motocross/Biker inspired jeans will take you a long way as you can pair them back to so many different tops, jackets, and accessories!  I recommend Current/Elliott’s The Moto Skinny, which is done in a thicker, washed black denim (perfect for the upcoming weather).  Call to order: 877.347.5527

New Orleans Boot

New Orleans Boot

2.  A tough boot creates a juxtaposition between girly & masculine when paired with a silky top or dress.  We are loving Joie’s New Orleans Boot.  Hitting on other important trends, buckles & straps, this boot has longevity and unbeatable comfort.

3.  The perfect top that tones down the masculine vibe of the other pieces worn while creating this look; Joie’s February Top features great detail in a neutral print that works well back to all of our favorite denim trends of the season.

4.  Studded belts are always a favorite amongst all of us at shopchantal.com, and Street’s Ahead is never short on ideas when trying to find that perfect studded number.  We recommend their Brass Studded Belt that wraps around the hip twice, for an extra bit of edge!

5.  Finally, a printed scarf in a rich textile creates polish & texture for the tough, girl chic look.  Me & Kashmiere has numerous styles to choose from.  One of our favorites is the Anaconda Printed Scarf in a neutral animal print.

Me & Kashmiere: As seen on Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston in Me & Kashmiere scarf

In the Northeast and well. . .  anywhere in the country, scarves are a staple and cashmere is a classic.

There is always a time and a place somehow, somewhere for cashmere and to have a scarf in the luxurious fabric is a perfect combination.

Our favorite for year round style is the lightweight cashmere scarf versions from Me & Kashmiere.  We love the designs, the signature ombre styles and the forever faithful solids.

See recently on Jennifer Aniston in New York as she films her recent flick, The Baster, this Me & Kashmiere scarf is the perfect accent to her outfit.

We love these scarves as a way to add a pop of color or paired with a simple tee for a real statement.  Layered over tops or dresses and with jackets, these scarves serve double duty.

We have a great selection now and are always getting new colors, prints and the ombre styles from Me & Kashmiere at shopchantal.com.

Check out our selection now and check for this style and others arriving soon.

Simple & Sleek: The Black Silk Wrap Dress

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Simply elegant, extremely timeless, and worth every penny is Edun’s Zimba Wrap dress from their Spring/Summer 2009 collection.  As every “in the know” fashaholic knows, DvF made this simple silhouette an international celebrity and Edun’s modern interpretation is simple, sleek, and polished!  We view this piece as a blank canvas that can be accessorized to portray any individual style and a piece that can be worn to any event.

Street chic:  Throw on a Me & Kashmiere scarf, Pour La Victoire’s Blanche, the Street’s Ahead Roger Belt, and a Foley & Corinna Mid-City Tote

Office Appropriate:  Wear some black opaque tights to transition into Spring, Twelfth Street’s Seema or Allison Bootie, and a Splendid Flare Cardi

Date Night Essential:  Throw it on with Pour La Victoire’s Tatienne Heel, accessorize with a fun, navy waist belt, and Gorjana’s Ludlow Earring

Pictured below:  Edun’s Zimba Wrap Dress available at www.shopchantal.com and Angelina Jolie wearing a longer version of this essential style!

Leopards and Tigers and Jaguars – Oh My!

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

This season we are seeing some really “fierce” animal prints from some unlikely sources.  We expect it from Rebecca Taylor who always has a leopard cardi in one collection or another, but to see it from Edun  and Nanette Lepore is surprising.  And we love the Me & Kashmiere threw in several animal prints this season – some of which we already sold out of!

Not ready for a strong support statement like the Nanette Lepore Spring Coat in a taupe and green leopard? Then try a colorful print in a cashmere scarf or a beautiful Maxi dress in a soft color combination.  Edun designer, Ali Hewson, is known for having travel experiences inspire each and every collection and this Spring’s is no exception.  Her recent trip to Africa was the driving force behind these fabulous tees and they are an easy statement paired back to denim or beautiful linen pants.

Any way you try this trend, you will definitely look ahead of the pack!

Better than a real boyfriend: Current/Elliott is my new love

Monday, November 24th, 2008

These days I am finding myself in love.  And, I’m not alone.  Celebs everywhere are in love too – with our new boyfriends.

Kate Holmes, Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon and more in love with their new boyfriends

Kate Holmes, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel Bilson, Amanda Peet and Reese Witherspoon - in love with their new boyfriends

Our new love interest: the best, most comfortable, sexy fitting jeans out there- the Current/Elliott Boyfriend Jean. It is slouchy, a bit higher in the rise so you can wear it low, it works best with a belt ( and oh, how I love belts) and it is cropped at just the right length so you can show off you boots without having to wear a skinny jean tucked in (even though I am in love with my new skinny jeans).

Look for me these days wearing a chunky sweater over something fun like my Nanette Lepore corset and my Pour la Victoire Bianca bootie sandals or maybe I’ll be dressed in flannel wearing my Joie Fara top tucked in with a Streets Ahead belt and a pair of suede boots. I guarantee i will be wearing my Current/Elliott 1957 Boyfriend jeans, carrying my Donald Pliner handbag and will be casually throwing my new Me & Kashmiere ombre scarf around my neck ala Jessica Alba.

Wish List Must Have: Me & Kashmiere Scarves

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

With the fall upon us and winter looming, I think I am most excited about wearing one of the hottest trends this season: colorful scarves worn indoors and out. Celebrities have been making this statement for several seasons and it is apparent, it is here to stay for sometime.

Kirsten Dunst, Heidi Klum and Jessica Alba

Kirsten Dunst, Gisele Bundchen and Jessica Alba

Indoors I am going to graciously wrap it around and wear it with my favorite new Splendid ballet neck. Outdoors I am planning to pair one with my traditional dark coat (Rebecca Taylor again!) that I pick up new every year.

This satisfaction is in my immediate future because the new Me & Kashmiere scarves are expected arrive this week at shopchantal.com.

Beautiful, light weight cashmere in the most amazing solid colors, ombres and patterns are going to fill the store as well. Be on the lookout for the email announcing their arrival. I’m sure they will be on every girls wish list this season
